Penang Island used to be one of the places that I lived. I did my first degree and got my first job there too. Penang Island also where i started to realize about my passion towards arts and culture, although I was streamlined through science and technology field.

Georgetown, which is the Penang capital town is currently recognized as one World Heritage town by UNESCO, United Nations from year 2008. I am so glad to be back to this splendid town twice this month. Both on official matters. I took my time to refresh my memories from then when I was a student. I also witness the effort of redevelopment upon many of the buildings scattered in Georgetown for the sake of maintaining its credibility as World Heritage Town. It was a very nice effort and I could tell that it really worth every penny spent towards conserving the priceless assets of Malaysia as well as the world. I was really inpressed by the efforts done so far.

A friend Azanie helped me stroll around the town she became my tour guide for the day.. I really thanked her for the short stroll and showed me some of wonderful locations in Georgetown for a photoshoot. I will definitely make a comeback later if I have the chance and means for another fruitful experience later. Here are some snapshots taken while I were there.

The traditional Malay performing arts fascinates me a lot because it exhibits the diverse cultural heritage of my origins. It does not only reflects the grandeur of the old court life and the rustic nature of proletariat but also served as a vehicle for transmission of norms and values. It is also an intermediary between real and the nether worlds. Nowadays, not much of younger generations become attracted to the art because of the latest advent of technologies. There are subtle needed impetus to reawaken the interest towards the Traditional malay performing arts. Some of the traditional performances actually have been neglected. Few have succumbed to the death bed and died naturally. Others only remains survived as an intellectual interest of academia and commercial needs of the tourist industry.

The germ of the art does not only emphasize on the entertainment value or to the matter of placating the spirits. Profoundly, a distinction between the disciples of the traditional performances and the modern forms of act is the microcosm world of manners. The cosmology of it does not means one to avoid the professionality tenet which forbade the realistic representation of the creativity figures. I mean, the presence of humility, modesty and obedience are the elements added together alongside the authentic foothold which proved that its legacy holds intact until today.

In my line of duty, not many new generations of creative folks adapt to this. They would rather face and use any platforms, interface to blurt hostility, defiance or feuding factions. In order to be heard or acknowledged, one presence in the surface slur the feeling of abhorrence towards those which are around. I experienced that myself.

The traditional Malay performances were brought along with the assimilated elements of numerous parallels. Be it at the level of communities or at the behest of deities and kingship. The influence and concept of its divine status in the Malay community reflected inside the traditional performances. For instance, the ‘Makyung’ or ‘Wayang Kulit’ chronicles depict the existence of proletariat and ruling class, which appeal (automatically) for respect and adoration.

Contrasting to the practices of the traditional performers, the hierarchy of creativity nowadays almost allow everything in the context of manners to be thrown away. The esteemed facade of humility seems to be collapsing rapidly to this secular function of entertainment. I encountered some so-called “creative” folks that arrogantly trying to be heard in a closed platform between the demarcated line of duty and interest. The conflict of interest are portrayed more than its original purpose in which to look for solutions. The earlier mansion grows and the interface goes as if the purpose is to bicker. Most of us shrugged our shoulders, looked at each other and finally leave the premise as a protest.

I must say and strongly believe that the necessity of procuring the correct approach is no longer a theory. Authorized party needs to react and profoundly execute. To be a developed nation, the creative industry should no longer neglect to this values. It is going to be useless if the authority spend millions and hundred millions in forms of anything, be it grants or loans to sponsor the interests of such ill-mannered people and claim that they have fulfill the needs of the commercial industry. Kindly revive the industry of mannerism. Then we will see some changes. I personally believe so.

Here is the Situation:

At noon yesterday, I went to the bank to pay my car installment for the month of 68th out of 84 months period. I was so glad that I still can pay it. On my way back to the office. I bumped into an old friend. I immediately greeted him. Shove him with a big warm handshake. Patted his shoulders and smile widely. I also shouted out gladly his name… like,

“Oh.. if isnt you FARID.. How are you doing..? Oh man.. you are looking fantastic! You look awesome.. and really Healthy Mann..!”

well, it almost sounds something like that. Literally.

Then I added some more:

“No way man.. Can you believe it? Our workplace are so freaking near.. we should have lunch together sometime.. that should be great.. bla bla.. Oh Farid…. Farid.. “

Again goes I.

He quickly cut to the chase and asked me to ‘shoot’ my number to him. Immediately, I did. It became ackward when he saw I quickly shove my iphone back to my pocket without saving his name. As both of us which are really in a hurry both of us wave our goodbyes and so long! I then walked on my way again.

After a few walks away..

“Wait a minute. I dont think his name is FARID..!”

NO? Oh no! I think I had mistaken him with someone else.. Did I? After a call to another friend of mine then I am sure that he is not FARID.. and this friend of whom i need the confirmation from also does not remember “FARID” as well.. But he did related to the real FARID… they were both classmates…

Then it means, I had forgotten “FARID’S” real name.. But at least i did not totally forget him….

After a tumultous moments of trying to remember “FARID”.. I brood over his name. He is not FARID. He is RAHMAT…. 100% correct! Yahoo! I am smarter than (budak kelas lima.. Budak kelas lima tak reti guna kalkulator saintifik ok?).. I quickly rang back to this friend that i asked about earlier and a very long “Aaaahh” goes for the both of us. Haha..

Moral of the story in the morning glory: I am not that Old that I forget a friend’s name. But I am just distracted. Very sorry Bro!

P/s: I did not recieve any SMS, Call or whatever from RAHMAT after that. Either he take me calling him Farid really personal or he also forgotten my Name.. wahh… After all i did not see him saving my name either >:( . cheh..

It is normal in Malaysia to speak Malaysian-English. (only those who are in the serious-journalism-line-kinda-people [SJLKP]) who later goes twiddle-dee twiddle-dum whenever they encounterd wrong english usages, do not find it normal). Si senor. Actually, I used to go nuts for english too. I was growing into becoming a Hezbollah of ‘Correct-English-All-The-Time’ fighter. It started after for quite some time, I was ‘institutionalized’ or being commanded to ADHERE to the correct usage of english, until I deprived myself of the true needs of communicating.. At my previous working place, you really need to be a ‘super-fantastic-perfect-english-smart-pants-kinda-guy’. To the extent, the comrades there do not matter if you don’t bother to close your mouth when its full but as long as you could write well (correctly) and know where to put your asterisk or bullets… you will be crowned as celestial….. haha.. but later thar to part-lah. If you dont… you will deter to the cold-bottomless pit of being put aside.. Heh.. But now i am done with that-lah.

Now that i found it out that nobody really cares, it strenghten me more. Logically a language is only an other way to communicate. Frantically, if you want to eat, you want to drink, you want to take a bath, you wanted a job.. or whatever ..you may say it through any languages that is understandable… Two ways? One Way? Monologing? Bloggin? Pfft… up to you lah.. right..? It is a free world.

It is also not a basic needs to be as good as Shakespeare or Rudyard Kipling or Ernest Hemingway or Paulo Coelho or Adrian Mole to tell the world about what you think. (Adrian Mole is a character created by Sue Townsend). As an example if you wanted to eat, simply make your hand in a manner of holding something and bring it up to the mouth. There you go. Universally, people will definitely understand that you want to eat (it). I believe it so. And that is the true foundation of communication. Even chimpanzies understands it too. Trust me!

The reality check is actually there. I found cases through my diminutive-experiences (compared to other’s-lah) at foreign countries, where the trivial numbers on a calculator could be used as a successful bargaining tool. There are also friends who don’t really ‘converse’ well (again correctly) in English, went well in the US and Europe, mind you! and bought the nicest thing ever at a very good price-lah! What else do you need? Still, Not Enough Ah?

This write-up of mine is intentionally presented this way and i agree that it does not really flow well.. at all. Ideas are flying here and there and does not make any sense (to some of you-lah). This value may not be recognized at some part of this wonderful world as well. Where? I mentioned it up there. Any readers who stumbled upon this rambling should go no further. I am afraid that it would spoil your sporadic renewals of enthusiasm. haha Big words dude! (I also found out that sporadic is a word used by the Greeks to describe their sperm..no offense though!)Therefore, avoid using it if you try to say something with me later! haha..

Nevermind-lah.. If you asked me, frankly i would say that I am feeling so freaking awesome now, that I almost could say anything… Nobody would dare to cross my writings with strikethroughs, red coloured fonts or all kind of demotivating wordings anymore… There are always other better methods to learn or to teach-lah… I mean it guys.. it is just as good as creating another rebel there! Oh shush now.. there is no more big words lah.. at this point of time… i dont really care.. and trust me i know you dont too… ahahaha.. im a changed man now.. i shall write what ever i want to.. I also must have good smells too.. Do not bother correcting although I dont mind being criticized. Screw all the strikethroughs and multicolored fonts to tell it to be your way… I am wayyy past over that.. ! Thank you!

p/s: i remembered vividly when i was at 14.. I Already have become obsessed over ‘Penn and Teller’ .. and they really said.. “We are really happy now like AliBongo From HELL!”.. Who re them? Google lah .. see how.. its magic too..
